The BBC said it was its most popular iPlayer-only programme to date. The BBC’s most high-profile iPlayer-only drama to date, retro snooker drama The Rack Pack, had 684,000 requests in January and nearly 1m to date. The government announced yesterday it would look to rush through legislation to close the “iPlayer loophole” which allows people to watch BBC shows on catchup services without a TV licence, costing the corporation an estimated £150m a year. The BBC is looking to take on rivals such as Amazon and Netflix with an expanded on-demand offering with exclusive iPlayer content and the switch of BBC3 to online-only last month.

Overall requests for both TV and radio were 315m, up from 309m the previous month but down from the record 352m in January last year.

Total requests for TV programmes on the iPlayer were 250m in January, down from 253m the previous month and 273m in January 2015.
